Alternative Means & Methods

Code Equivalency Solutions

When existing buildings cannot practically meet current prescriptive code requirements, alternative means and methods (AM&M) provide a pathway to achieve equivalent fire safety through engineering analysis. EB Life Safety specializes in developing and presenting AM&M solutions to Florida AHJs.

What is Alternative Means & Methods?

Section 104.11 of the International Building Code allows the building official to approve alternative materials, designs, and methods of construction that provide equivalent performance to prescriptive code requirements. This provision is critical for existing buildings where full prescriptive compliance may be physically impossible, prohibitively expensive, or architecturally destructive.

Common AM&M Applications

Our AM&M Process

EB Life Safety's alternative means and methods process includes building assessment and code gap analysis, identification of prescriptive non-compliances, development of alternative solutions with engineering justification, preparation of formal AM&M submission package, presentation to AHJ with supporting documentation, and follow-up coordination through approval.

Why Choose EB Life Safety?

Our team has extensive experience working with Florida AHJs to gain acceptance of alternative means and methods solutions. We understand what AHJs need to see in an AM&M submission and how to present engineering justifications effectively. Our track record of successful approvals demonstrates our ability to develop technically sound, defensible solutions.
