Smoke Control Systems
Expert Smoke Control Engineering
Smoke control systems are critical life safety features in high-rise buildings, atriums, and underground structures. EB Life Safety provides comprehensive smoke control engineering services including system design review, rational analysis, acceptance testing, and annual commissioning per NFPA 92 and IBC Section 909.
Smoke Control Services
- Design Review - Engineering review of smoke control system designs for code compliance
- Rational Analysis - IBC 909.4 rational analysis documenting design approach and engineering methodology
- Acceptance Testing - Pre-occupancy testing to verify system performance meets design criteria
- Annual Testing - NFPA 4 integrated testing of smoke control systems with fire alarm
- Troubleshooting - Diagnosing and resolving smoke control system failures
- Remediation - Engineering solutions to correct deficient smoke control systems
Types of Systems
Stairwell Pressurization
The most common smoke control system in Florida high-rises. Supply fans maintain positive pressure (0.05 to 0.10 inches water gauge) in exit stairwells to prevent smoke infiltration during a fire. Proper testing verifies pressure differentials with doors open and closed.
Atrium Smoke Exhaust
Mechanical exhaust systems remove smoke from large atrium spaces, maintaining tenable conditions in the lower occupied areas during fire events. Design involves calculating smoke production rates, exhaust capacity, and makeup air requirements.
Elevator Pressurization
Pressurization of elevator shafts and lobbies, particularly important for firefighter access elevators and occupant evacuation elevators.
Why Smoke Control Matters
Smoke is responsible for more fire-related deaths than direct flame exposure. In high-rise buildings, the stack effect can rapidly spread smoke throughout the building through elevator shafts and stairwells. Properly designed and maintained smoke control systems save lives by keeping egress paths clear during evacuation.
