NFPA 80 vs NFPA 101: Understanding the Difference
Building owners often hear references to NFPA 80 and NFPA 101 but may not understand how these standards differ and overlap. Here is a practical guide.
NFPA 80: Fire Door Standard
NFPA 80, Standard for Fire Doors and Other Opening Protectives, focuses specifically on fire door assembly components, installation requirements, inspection and testing procedures, maintenance standards, rolling fire doors and fire shutters, and fire dampers and ceiling dampers.
Annual Inspections: All fire door assemblies must be inspected annually by qualified persons. Documentation: Written records must be retained for at least 3 years. Deficiency Correction: Failed components must be repaired or replaced to restore the fire rating.
NFPA 101: Life Safety Code
NFPA 101, the Life Safety Code, is a comprehensive standard covering means of egress requirements, building construction and fire protection, interior finish and contents, occupancy-specific requirements, fire protection features, and building services and systems.
How They Work Together
These standards complement each other. NFPA 80 covers fire doors specifically with annual testing protocols and 3-year record retention, while NFPA 101 covers the entire building with general maintenance requirements. NFPA 80 specifies hourly ratings for doors, while NFPA 101 requires rated doors in fire barriers.
